What this is

Feng shui counts the year from Lichun, the start of spring, about the 4th of February, and its months from the solar terms — not from Chinese New Year. The Grand Duke (Tai Sui) holds the sector of the year's animal: a side sitting with him behind it is said to be supported, a side facing him to be confronting him. The Year Breaker is the sector opposite, and the Three Killings a quarter of the compass that may be faced but never sat on.

Of the nine Flying Stars, the 8 White and the 9 Purple bring prosperity, the 1 White and the 6 White help, the 4 Green favours study and romance; the 5 Yellow and the 2 Black are left undisturbed, the 3 Jade brings quarrels and the 7 Red injuries. The year's star stands in each palace all year; the month's joins it at each solar term.

A side defends an end and attacks toward the other, and the sides change ends at the half (each quarter in American football): this is the ground's year, not a side's fortune — a caution on the read, not a testimony for either side.
